**IMPORTANT NOTICE**
REVERSAL OF PLAYING DAYS FOR THE MONTHLY MEDAL AND STAR COMPETITONS FROM MARCH 2008
The first two months of the 2008 season the participation in the Monthly Medal Competition has increased markedly (93 in January, 110 in February). This increase will affect the completion time, this competition being a one day competition. At the same time the STAR Competition has not attracted the response STA has hoped for. So STA has decided to make a change in the playing days of both competitions which will definitely benefit both. Therefore from March the Monthly Medal Competition will be played on the FIRST SATURDAY of the month the STAR Competition on the FIRST SUNDAY of the month thus reversing the arrangement up to February. This means if time is not adequate to complete the Monthly Medal competition on the Saturday, because of heavy participation, or, rain, it can be continued on the Sunday. Also hopefully those playing on Saturday will be able to find partners to play in the STAR on the next day, Sunday. Even if the Monthly Medal has to be continued on Sunday the STAR Competition will still proceed. This will encourage the playing of the doubles game. Where the 18 and Under Competition is fixed together with the STAR it will also proceed.
AS SUCH THE NEXT MONTLY MEDAL + MINI TENNIS WILL BE ON THE FIRST OF MARCH (first Saturday of the month) AND THE STAR WILL BE ON THE SECOND OF MARCH (first Sunday of the month).
**IMPORTANT NOTICE**
This is an introduction to the new Selangor Tennis Association (STA) Junior Competition Called ‘THE PRUDENTIAL-STA
CHALLENGE,’ fully sponsored by Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad (PRUDENTIAL) for boys in the age groups of 12 &
Under, 14 & Under and 16 & Under.
The format for the PRUDENTIAL-STA CHALLENGE (THE CHALLENGE) competition has been decided with the objective and
aspiration of PRUDENTIAL to develop and produce tennis players of caliber for the long term through a more
competitive vehicle of quality. To achieve this objective two groupings of players will be created, according to
their respective age groups and the competition will be carried out in stages as described below.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR 2008
17th December 2007
As always, and as it should be, STA’s main thrust is in junior development. As before our only main constrain to successfully completing our programme is our proximity to LTAM. Our programme is more likely than any other association, except KLTA, and perhaps NSLTA, to be affected by LTAM’s programmes especially in terms of timing of competitions and other events. For 2008 STA’s programme will consist of competitions, junior and senior, and other development events such as involving coaching and officiating
2008 will see changes in the STA Junior Competition Programme brought about by the desire of the sponsor Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad (PRUDENTIAL) to upgrade its sponsored competitions with the objective, and, its aspiration to develop and produce players of caliber. To achieve this objective a new competition will be introduced entitled the PRUDENTIAL-STA Challenge 2008 (THE CHALLENGE) applicable to boys in the age groups of 16 & Under, 14 & Under and 12 & Under. This is not discrimination on the girls but
is the result of the scarcity of girl players to take part as had been experienced these past years.
THE CHALLENGE will be a series of six tournaments carried out in three stages. The first stage, consisting of two tournaments will function as qualifying tournaments, after which the competition will be split into two groups during the second stage namely Tier One, consisting of the best eight players from the two qualifying tournaments and the rest into Tier Two. There will be three tournaments in the second stage and finally there will be the third stage which consists of Masters tournaments for both Tier One and
Tier Two for the various age groups concerned. Please study properly the rules for THE CHALLENGE competition.
For those who are not eligible to play in THE CHALLENGE, due to age consideration, a new competition for the 18 & Under age group will also be created. These will be, five one day completions, including a Masters competition to be played every other month together with the S.T.A.R. which itself will be played on the first Saturday of every month. The STA Junior Age Group Competition will remain to be held for both boys and girls for all age groups except 18 & Under, although, they are no longer sponsored by PRUDENTIAL.
With these competitions all those eligible to play will have the experience to compete in individual competitions of various qualities from the Monthly Medal the Age Group and the PRUDENTIAL-STA Challenge.
Competitions
Junior
- Monthly Medal – to be held on the first Saturday of the month. There will be 9 of these including the two-day
Masters to see the season off.
- S.T.A.R. – there are 8 (9) of these to be held on the first Sunday of every month. These have not received
the response STA would have liked but still it is useful as a means of giving an opportunity for our young
layers to play doubles. STA will have to do more to get improved participation. To discontinue this event will be
to let down the sponsors particularly.
- With the boys 16 & Under, 14 & Under and 12 & Under age groups becoming part of the PRUDENTIAL-STA Challenge
our 18 & Under players, especially those who have become ineligible due to age seemed to have been sidelined. To
give them an opportunity to continue playing with STA, a new one day competition will be held for them to be
played once every two months and is called the 18 & Under Competition.
- The PRUDENTIAL-STA Challenge as briefly described above but details are available separately.
- The STA Junior Age Group Competition, the same as in 2007 but no longer sponsored by PRUDENTIAL.
- The MILO-STA Junior Interteam Competition – planned to be held over three weekends each time on the fourth
weekend of the month concerned.
- The GENTING-STA Junior Interstate Competition 2008.
- The MBPJ Junior Open Championships 2008.
- The GENTING-SELANGOR Junior International Championships 2008.
- The Selangor Closed Championships 2008.
- The Selangor Open Championships 2008.
Other Events
- The GENTING-STA Junior Elite Coaching Camps
- STA Junior Coaching Clinics/Camps
- High Performance Coaching Camp
- STA Coaches Workshop
- STA Officiating Seminar
- Sports Psychology Seminar
- Mini Tennis – Mini Tennis as a supporting Event in the Monthly Medal Competition will remain and ad hoc Mini
Tennis Events will also be planned.
STA is happy to note that there is a movement forward with our present crop of junior players. Juan Los Santos, T. Neesha and Christian Lee all have acquired ITF World Junior ranking. Then we have Ben Klaas and Mohd. Nazeem Khan awaiting to join their group. Adele Boey is making big waves among her peers especially in Asia. Theiviya is moving that way too. Then comes the group consisting of Perljit Singh, Duzbionjit Singh, Ahmad Deedat, Kevin Loke, Colin Wong, Saw Wye Jones, Kenneth Tan, Joshua Jordan, Damian Rocky, Low Kar Win, Sean Yip, Archana Rajan and Alicia Boey. The rear is made up of the talented group consisting of Tony Chin, Talhah Rahizam, Tan Zuzin Yang Saw Wye Ken, Clarence Koh, Delizavern Kaur, Christina Ng, Stefan Gligorov, and Alina Priti Jeremiah.
STA’s Junior Competition Programme reflects the logical flow in its development policy and in particular the new PRUDENTIAL-STA Challenge will provide the important impetus. Eligible junior players are urged to participate seriously in the challenge as an obvious way forward.
All the very best to everyone for 2008.
This write-up and the accompanying Calendar for 2008 overrides all similar write-ups and Calendar previously published which are hereby rescinded.
