SUKMA 2011 - updated 20 June, 2011
The state host for the 14th SUKMA 2012, Pahang, decided not the hold the tennis event in 2012. As such Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) stepped in to hold the SUKMA Tennis event on the 2nd to the 9th of June 2011 at the National Tennis Center Jalan Duta. Without three of its stalwarts in the Men’s Team, namely Ahmad Deedat Razak, Modh Nazim Khan both on Davis Cup duties, and, Christian Lee, enrolled in the University of Arkansas, USA, our Men’s Team consisted of Juan Los Santos, Colin Wong, Joshua Jordan, Hanifah Rahizam and Mohd Zaki Pauzi. Juan Los Santos, who had not played tennis for 12 months previously was persuaded to join the squad to train sometime in April. To show that his skill had not left him he entered the LTAM National Circuit Competition 2 at Jalan Duta on the 20th to the 24th of May as a warm up to SUKMA. However, in six rounds he beat the 6th seed, 10th seed, the 4th seed and the 2nd seed to get to the final where he finally fell to the 1st seed Si Yew Ming.
Our Ladies Team was intact from the gold medal winning SUKMA 2010 team with the addition of Alysia Boey. The rest of the team were, Neesha Thirumalaichelvam, Theiviya Selvarajoo, Adelle Boey and Archaanah Rajan.
On the 1st day the teams were visited by the Executive Director of the Majlis Sukan Negeri Selangor, MSNS, En. Nor Zamri Ishak and the Selangor Contingent Chef-de-Mission Y.B. Dr Ahmad Yunus bin Khairy, who stayed the whole day.
In the Team Event, our golden girls struck Gold again, and, the Silver too. However our Men’s team managed to get a Bronze thanks particularly to Juan Los Santos. Congratulations to both teams.
In the Individual Events, our girls took the Gold and Silver medals in the doubles event.
In the Ladies Singles Event, Alysia Boey won the Silver medal (The Gold going to Jawairiah Noordin of Negeri Sembilan) and, Archaanah Rajan earned a Bronze. Congratulations to Archaanah who won a Silver and a Bronze medal on her 1st playing SUKMA role.
In the Men’s Individual Event, the hectic time Juan Los Santos had preparing for SUKMA took its toll on him physically and unexpectedly lost to Khoo Er Yang of Negeri Sembilan, whom he had beaten twice previously in competitions (including in the Team Event). Gold would have been nice but Silver in the circumstances was still admirable.
In the Mixed doubles finals the team of Syed Agil and Jawairiah had a slight edge, in experience on our team of Juan Los Santos and Theiviya. With skill and fighting spirit, our team got on even term after losing the 1st set, with a 6 – 4 win in the second. It was a very close thing in the end even though the Negeri Team won 10 to 3 in the deciding Super Tie Break.
Congratulations to Team Negeri Sembilan.
Our target was to win 2 Gold medals. This we did. On top of that we also won 4 Silver medals through Juan Los Santos, Alysia Boey, Alysia Boey and Archaanah and Juan Los Santos and Theiviya and 1 Bronze from Archannah.
Congratulations and well done to the players and coaches. Thank you parents and STA and a very big thank you MSNS.
